Kerr Candies
Unfortunately, no. We are not set up to sell directly to the public. However, you can purchase most of our confections at leading retailers everywhere.
Q. Can I buy Kerrs candy online?
Yes, there are a few online companies that offer a limited selection of Kerr's. We suggest you Google® "Kerr's Candies" to obtain an up-to-date listing.
Q. Why do I find unwrapped candies in the package sometimes?
Occasionally, during the vibration of the bagging process, some candies will work their way out of the wrappers. While our operators are trained to watch for and remove these candies before they enter a finished package some do manage to make it through.
Q. Why are there more of some flavours then others in assortments?
To prepare an assortment, a batch of each flavour is produced and layered in our collection bins, then mixed. Ideally when the different flavours are combined for a mixture, there would be an equal amount of each piece in every package. As the mixtures tumble from our collection bins, through the conveyors and onto our packaging units, the proportions may change as it is all a matter of probability.
Q. Is your facility nut-free?
All hard boil candies (Lollipops, Drops, Scotch Mints, etc...) and medium boil candies (Caramels, Chews, Toffees, etc.) are produced in our nut-free facility. Soft boil confections (Ju Jubes, Jelly Beans) and pressed confections (English Mints, Wintergreen Mints) are manufactured for Kerr's in plants that may or may not be nut free.
Q. Are your products gluten-free?
The only two products which may contain or may have come in contact with gluten (wheat, barley, oates, rye) are Jelly Beans and Gum Drops. The rest of our products are produced in a gluten-free facility.
Q. What is the shelf-life of your candies?
For hard candies, the shelf-life is 2 years from the date of manufacture. For soft candies, the shelf-life is 15-18 months from the date of manufacture. Generally speaking, lab tests indicate to us that our products are still edible past their respective shelf-life periods if stored under ideal conditions.
Q. How do I read the date code on your package?
The date of production can be found printed in black ink on the back panel of every package. The date code is year, month, day (YMMDD).
Q. Can my toddler eat your candy?
When food is consumed, the saliva that is secreted will eventually dissolve the sugars in candy. Given the circular shape of many foods like hotdogs, hard candies, etc. the potential to lodge in a childs throat exists. Therefore, it is our recommendation that children under the age of 5 do not eat candy without adult supervision.
Q. What is a release agent and why is it in some of your candies?
Many natural fruit and legumes produce oil. You can get oil from oranges, sesame, avocados, coconuts, peanuts, olives, jojoba and soybean. These oils are generally mono or polyunsaturated fats and are good for you in maintaining overall health. Fats from animals are generally saturated fats and are solid which is why you can clearly see marbling in meat. It is recommended that you avoid eating too much of this type of fat. Fat is an essential nutrient required for maintaining good health and growth and is just as important as protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. It provides insulation and cushioning for protecting your internal organs and acts as a carrier for fat-soluble vitamins like Vitamin A, D, E, K. It also allows protein to concentrate on it’s primary role of building healthy cells. Having said that in order for us to manufacture candy and prevent it from sticking to all our equipment we need to apply something to our surfaces. Most food processors do this. We list soy in our ingredients to inform our consumers who are allergic to soybeans. In one batch of candy the amount of soybean oil we use is 965 parts per million(ppm). To clarify this means that if you had 1 million loonies in a pile, 965 of those coins would be quarters mixed in. That is why the amount of fat we have in our product is considered trace.
Q. Why do fruit drops contain licorice?
Fruit, botanically defined, is the fleshy ovary of a seed plant that encloses seeds with it’s content or accessory part. Anise (or Licorice) fits that grouping.
Q. Are your light candies sugar-free?
Our light products are made with sugar substitutes which generally have 1/2 the calories or less than regular table sugar. Though our products are technically sugar free, we are not permitted to use that claim in Canada as we are not “calorie-free”, (< 5 cal/serving). In Canada, you can only claim sugar free if you are very low in both sugar and calories.
Q. What sweetner do you use in your Light confections?
Kerr's Light is sweetend with Splenda® brand sweetener.
Q. Why are the Light candies so expensive?
Quite simply, the cost of sugar substitutes is substantially higher than sugar.
Q. Do your Light products cause a laxitive effect?
Our Light/No Sugar Added products are made with sugar substitutes such as polydextrose, isomalt, sorbitol and sweetened with sucralose. The caloric content using these ingredients is less than regular table sugar of the same weight. The reason for the reduction in calories is due to the fact that humans cannot metabolize these ingredients in the same manner that they processes sugar. These products are not completely digested in the stomach which is the reason why they should be consumed in moderation as eating any sugar free product in excess can sometimes cause cramping and gas in the lower intestine.
